Here’s today’s selection

3:50 Fontwell – Guttural

Wavecrest was a ready winner when last seen out and a 9lb rise for it still leaves him below his initial handicap mark, but that was 140 days ago and he’ll need to prove his fitness here.

Twenty Twenty makes some appeal taking a big drop in grade but rider George Gorman is rarely seen in the saddle these days, and at a bigger price we prefer the claims of Guttural.

He seems to need good ground to show his best, so two moderate efforts this winter/spring on ground too soft for him can be easily enough forgiven. However, they will have got him fitter, and he’s dropped 11lb for them too, so is starting to look nicely handicapped.

His form when third to the useful pointer Garde Ville at Ludlow around a year ago is solid enough at this level, and he then won a point (good ground) at Edgcote, beating Alan Hill’s Zertopek. I rang Alan to ask if he rated that form but he just said “who the * hell is this?” and put the phone down, which ended things rather abruptly. Ah well, he’s going to be a bet anyway.
