The prospect of rain makes it hard to approach Thursday’s racing with confidence, but a bit of the wet stuff will not do the chances of SAO any harm. The Rebecca Menzies-trained nine-year-old showed little of his old dash in a couple of starts in the autumn, but shaped a fair bit better than the result – leading from the third fence having pulled hard and only weakening before the last having been much too enthusiastic – on his return from a break at Kelso 12 days ago.
He will need to settle better to score, but he’s already a stone lower than at the end of last season, and the spark he showed last time had been missing previously this term. With that likely to take a bit of the excess fizz away, he should be closer to his best for a yard among the winners, and he can outclass his rivals now dropped into 0-115 class for the first time in his career.
