At Navan, I’m taking a chance on the well-handicapped ECCLESIASTICAL to snap a lengthy losing run. He struggled off marks north of 80 in 2021, but shaped as if on the way back more than once in a truncated 2022 campaign in which he dropped markedly in the ratings.
A winner off 79 on his second start of the season in 2021, he has tumbled to a lowly 47, which means he’s running off the equivalent of 40 here when James Ryan’s 7lb claim is taken into account.
Ecclesiastical travelled well into the straight at Dundalk on his latest start, looking in need of the run after a six-month absence, and he now looks ready to get back to winning ways with the handicapper’s help.
He is a C&D winner in maiden company, and the fact that the horse he beat that day won off a BHA mark of 95 the following season shows how far Tom McCourt’s gelding has slipped.
