14.25 – Ascot – Third Wind
As seems often the case these days, they’re ain’t a fat lot we can agree on on a Saturday, but on the plus side, the two we do agree on are both a big price, so we can at least take a couple of small swipes at today’s racing without doing a lot of damage if we’re wrong.
The Long Walk is a case in point. It’s a shame we aren’t going to see Buzz line up after his injury sustained on the gallops earlier in the week, as this division is still open and he could have been a contender. Thyme Hill has a terrific chance if you look at his overall body of form, but whether you now want to take 7/4 after a poor effort in Auteuil’s Grand Prix D’Automne is quite another point. Champ can’t be backed if Nicky Henderson’s home reports are to be believed, although rumours of a possible fall during schooling might explain the switch back to hurdling.
If you are asking us for the most likely winner, then Ronald Pump looks the answer. There was nothing wrong with his good second to Honeysuckle at Fairyhouse, and if he gets a better run at it this year, he ought to have his chance at the Stayers title come March.
