2:40 Haydock – Melayu Kingdom

Thursday’s racing sees the quality increase a notch, and yet we still find ourselves drawn to a couple of unreliable sorts, hoping they might yet turn a corner, in much the same way as one-nation Tories hope that Boris Johnson might be telling the truth when he says he’s been ‘humbled’ by Sue Gray’s report. They suspect he means ‘rumbled’, but they’ll still give him another chance.

I was very taken by the debut effort of MELAYU KINGDOM at Thirsk last season, and even more so when he rattled home in the Listed 2-Y-O Trophy at Ripon on his next start having blown the start badly. He’s been very disappointing since, doing plenty wrong in his races, but offered more hope dropped to 5f at York last time, despite struggling with the early pace on the Knavesmire, and I’ll take him to fulfil that early promise in the Betfred Good Luck To Huddersfield Giants Handicap.

Melayu Kingdom looked likely to finish last with two furlongs to go at York, but he found his stride belatedly, and weaved through the field to finish a creditable fifth of 15 to Korker.

The return to six furlongs will help now, and while he needs to keep his fiery temperament in check, he’s clearly a very talented performer, and well up to winning at this level if keeping to the straight and narrow.
