4:45 Newmarket – Chrysos
Newmarket was profitable for us on Tuesday, but Wednesday looks difficult, with just the Abernant Stakes for the exposed horses, and that also looking to have traps, with much depending on whether the three-year-old Ebro River has trained on.
He was a bull last year, and could go either way, but if he has grown again, he could be a top-class sprinter this season. Too many ifs for my liking, however.
The one race I like the look of at HQ is the closing handicap, and while most of the runners are entitled to improve, I thought the return to a mile and the switch to turf on a straight track would be a big bonus to CHRYSOS, whose latest run over 7f at Lingfield is a complete throw-out.
As a son of Medaglio D’Oro, it’s easy to make the lazy assumption that Chrysos ought to be suited by artificial surfaces, but the stats don’t support that notion, and the colt looked unsuited to being held up behind a dawdling pace at Lingfield, pulling hard with nowhere to go, and unable to show what he was capable of.
He made all the running over 1m on his previous start, and a return to positive tactics will help.
Of more interest is the dam-side of Chrysos’s pedigree, as he is out of the smart miler Crowley’s Law, who disappointed on her only all-weather run at Lingfield, but progressed into a high-class performer on turf, winning three times on good or yielding ground in the UK, and finishing second in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland.
If she is any guide, then Chrysos ought to leave his all-weather form well behind now switched to turf, and this £315,000 purchase looks overpriced on that consideration.
